Our 2025 Halloween Costumes

Our 2025 Halloween Costumes

I was finalizing a post about my Tech Witch costume from earlier this month when I realized I never posted the kids' costume from last year... it didn’t feel right to break the tradition. So... here we are.

Part of this is memory-keeping and part is inspiration... but ultimately I hope our choices spark an idea for you and if that's the case I'd love to hear from you.

The Idea

Recently, with the kids getting older, we’ve started our costumes with, maybe, a vague idea and then head to a thrift hand store. Going in Zoey didn't yet know what she wanted to be while Ada knew that she wanted to be Rumi from K-Pop Demon Hunters so we were super excited to spot a gold jacket right away that would be perfect for it. Zoey ended up falling in love with a white dress and chunky gold necklace and decided to become an Angel since a Halloween costume was the perfect excuse to buy them.

The Costumes

Angel Cat

Zoey went with Angel so she could justify a new white dress and heavy sparkly jewelry she loved. I then went onto Amazon and, with her approval, ordered gold wings and a white halo. She next added white cat ears switching the costume to an Angel Cat and on the day used watercolor pencil crayons to add a cute nose and whiskers.

Rumi

After grabbing the gold jacket we kept an eye out for anything else that would work for the costume before going home and having Ada pick through her closet for clothing she already had that would work. She ended up pairing the jacket with a few cut-up white tops, black leggings, and black shorts.

With Matt she started working on a Rumi sword but didn't finish in time... so she had more hands available for candy. Over the last year she understandably put off working on it but this month we realized it would be perfect for her 2026 costume so she picked it back up.

To make her definitely be Rumi I ordered two sets of purple hair online but worried, after watching reels online, that it would only work the one time. When I told Ada she chose to keep her outfit and hair pristine for that night and instead pivoted her school costume to a bunny and borrowed from our Easter bin.

Dinosaur Rider

Normally just the kids dress up but our neighbors seemed to be going Halloween strong and so Matt bought a dinosaur costume that made it look like he was riding a T-rex.

Spider

Normally us adults don't really dress up but ever since 2019 when I made a Doctor Who themed shirt I normally just wear that when going out with friends and our kids... and if someone calls me on the lack of dressing up I point it out and say I'm The Doctor. It's a bit tight so I normally only wear it on Halloween and somehow never splurged on a sonic screwdriver.

That said, with Matt dressing up and remembering an earlier attempt at putting a spider on my head for a witchy-themed business coffee meetup I decided the shirt wasn't enough and added to it... and then went a step further with watercolor pencil crayons to add a web. It seemed a shame to not use the spider and I still had the hair clip attached so figured why not!

This time around I put my hair up, added a spider web to my face, and chose web-like dangling earrings.

If you don't have this spider (Dollar Tree in 2025) and want the same I've previously posted about adding a single pipe cleaner spider or even multiple before.

Halloween Night

Halloween night was rainy so we all grabbed umbrellas and despite not going too far got wet. When we returned we pulled out all of the candy I bought (in case of trick-or-treaters), made some homemade pizzas as the kids went through their haul, and I opened up trading times were I traded the kids their candy for the stuff I bought offering a bigger selection for all. We didn't get too many people coming by but we had a blast.

I've noticed as the kids get older the costumes somehow get easier (as they do more of them) but also more stressful as it's on their timeline to finish. That said. I wouldn't trade it for the world and love scrolling through all the characters they were over the years.
